“What do we do now?” I asked as Marco got behind the wheel. The red and blue lights were still silently flashing around the parking lot. “He knows Reilly hired us.”

“But he can’t stop us from investigating without an injunction,” Marco said. “And that will have to go through the DA’s office, which means we need to close this case quickly.”

As we got back onto the road I asked, “Are you okay? They could’ve hurt you really badly, Marco.”

“I’ve been through worse,” he said and placed his free hand on mine. “We’ve been through worse. It’s part of the job. That’s why fitness training is so important.”

“You know what we’re going to do first thing tomorrow?” I asked, quickly changing the subject. “Pay a visit to that truck stop. They have to have security cameras. They can tell us whether or not Luke was really there on Monday.”

“Good idea.”

“Hey! We could even stop for breakfast first.”

Marco gave me a side glance. “How about this instead? We’ll head there right after our morning workout and a healthy breakfast of fruit and granola.”

I sank back against the seat with a sigh. Goodbye, buttery blueberry pecan muffin. Hello intensive training session.
